Blood Orange Greek Yogurt Chips With A Chocolate Dusting
Tis the season for blood oranges! These delicious and super juicy oranges will only be around for a few more weeks so it is time to stock up! Blood oranges, while delicious on their own, go very well when combined with other ingredients. Knowing this, I decided to experiment with the oranges to make a nice and refreshing snack!
I had an idea the other day about freezing Greek yogurt trying to make a healthier version of an ice pop. With that idea in mind, I combined the two ideas and decided to make blood orange Greek yogurt chips. I looked to see what else I had around the house and decided I would add a little bit of honey and grate in a tiny bit of chocolate. This would add a little sweetness and also counteract the tart flavor from the yogurt.
With all of the ingredients in play, it was go time. I took about half a cup of Greek yogurt and stirred it until smooth in a small bowl. Next I cut the blood orange in quarters. I cut the oranges in quarters instead of halves because I was not sure how much juice I would need to add. I ended up using the juice of three out of the four quarters of the orange. It ended up being the perfect ratio.
Next to combat the tart flavor of the citrus, I added about 2 tablespoons of honey. To finish off the yogurt concoction, I grated in about 2 teaspoons of milk chocolate into the mix.
Once the mix was smooth, I poured it all into a giant ziplock bag. I made sure all the mix went into the corner and cut a tiny hole in the edge in order to create the perfect homemade piping bag.
I piped as many chips about the size of my pinky nail (although some ended up being a little bigger or smaller) as I could fix on a small baking sheet that was covered with wax paper. After the majority of the mix was used I put the chip in the freezer for a half hour.
Once the half hour was up it was time to check on the chips. The froze very nicely and had a great consistency. The chips easily peeled off the wax paper and made the perfect snack. The blood orange flavor really blossomed in the yogurt. After grabbing a few to snack on, I threw the rest of them back in a ziplock and in the freezer.
Since they are so tiny, it is easy to grab a handful of them to snack on (quickly though, otherwise they may melt!!) or even to put into some oatmeal or a topping on a cake! Really this could be done with any type of yogurt and fruit. Such a simply and yummy snack to make! Here’s an overview of the recipe:
Blood Orange Greek Yogurt Bites With Chocolate Dusting
- 1/2 cup of plain Greek yogurt
- 1 blood orange, ripe
- 2 tablespoons of honey
- 1-3 teaspoons of milk chocolate
- Combine all ingredients and stir. Depending on the size of the orange, the whole fruit may not be necessary to use. After piping on the wax paper, freeze for 30-40 minutes. Enjoy!!!!
